The David

The David itself is hard to see, buried as it is in layers of commentary and kitsch replicas. The eagle gaze struck me most, and the contra-posto stance tracable back 2000 years to the classical Greek spear carrier. The guide did a good job of talking about the criticisms--the hands are too big because yada, yada, yada. (George)

Lorenzo Medici called Michelangelo back to Firenza where he completed the David in three years. My God! What an unmatchable work of art! Seventeen feet high. The veins in the hand, the distant stare on his face, the feet, the ass, the penis, the flexed muscles in his throat and back. Beautiful!!!!!! A definite high point of my life. (Joanne)
